Summer jackets to see you through our infuriatingly changeable weather

For days when sun can turn to showers in a matter of minutes, try one of these versatile jackets, for everything an Irish summer can throw at you.

Now that Ireland is opening up again, we’re gradually finding ourselves out of the house more. What went from a weekly expedition to the supermarket with some socially-distanced walks in-between has given way to all sorts of rediscovered joys, from being able to pick up a coffee to meeting a friend outdoors.

With this new-found freedom has come a reminder about just how capricious an Irish summer can be. While we might have longed for picnics in the sun for months, recently the weather has been less than obliging. We add and peel off layers as it cycles from clouds, to rain, to sunshine at 20 minute intervals, and you feel like you’d need a whole wardrobe packed into your bag to cope.

A versatile summer jacket is the best solution: not so warm you’ll be sweating the second the sun’s out, yet enough to add an extra layer on cloudy days. Here are some of the best ones on the high street at the moment.

For days when you just know you’re going to get caught in a shower, this jacket from Arket will see you through. Details like a hood, adjustable drawstrings and generous pockets with flaps make this a choice so practical your mother would be proud, yet its oversized silhouette and acid green colour make it stylish enough that you won’t be rushing to stuff it in your bag once the rain passes.

It would look great paired with everything from leggings to a midi dress, the kind of go-to jacket you come back to for months on end. Made from a recycled polyester and organic cotton blend, it’s also a better choice for the environment than a jacket made from virgin materials. Funnel neck parka, now €75, Arket.

This navy cotton jacket feels like a grown-up version of your favourite denim one. It will still go with everything and is the perfect weight to throw on over any summer outfit, yet its boxy shape, zip closure and drawstring detail make it feel fresh.

It’s also made from 64% organic cotton, which has a lower impact on the environment. CONSIDERED Navy Organic cotton jacket, now €38, Topshop.

Summer is a time for relaxed styles and fabrics: even a cloudy day can feel warm, so a jacket that allows air to flow around your body will help you deal with any temperature fluctuations. Made from linen and cotton, both known for their breathability, this Cos jacket is a great choice for such days.

Its oversized style provides laid-back elegance, while its simple shape and neutral tone will ensure it goes with almost everything. Plus, it has pockets so generous you could carry your whole life around in them: one of the things all my favourite jackets have in common. Cotton-linen jacket with draped front, €89, Cos.

Another design made from a linen-cotton blend, this beautiful blazer has a loose shape that stops it feeling too formal, yet it will effortlessly elevate a simple outfit. Its soft green shade will make you feel summery even if the sun is nowhere to be seen.

I almost bought & Other Stories wool version of this blazer and I’m sorely tempted again by this summer offering. Linen-blend blazer, €99, & Other Stories.

Trench coats are a classic for a reason: their combination of a longer length in a light, water-resistant fabric makes them equipped for anything an Irish summer can throw at you. They manage to be light enough for warm days yet give you the protection you need in a shower.

This one from Zara also has a hood, a detail I wish my own trench coat had, while its silhouette is looser than some more traditional styles. Hooded trench coat, now €39.99, Zara.

Shackets, or shirt/jackets are all over the high street this summer, and it’s not hard to see why. Not only are they perfect for changeable summer weather, they’re also a great choice for people who would rather go without a jacket, providing a layer with the look of a shirt, but with a little extra heft.

This white one from H&M combines utilitarian details with an oversized shape, and would definitely add an edge to any look. Twill shacket, €59.99, H&M.
