LV creative director Nicolas Ghesqui’re takes inspiration from?the old orient with this season’s Cruise Collection.

To take influence from Western culture is not a new feat: but creating a collection that delicately balances traditional and modernity is. That is what?Nicolas Ghesqui’re achieved this week with his latest cruise collection, which was as beautiful as it was ambitious.

The show took place on the?outskirts of Kyoto – once the capital of Japan. Nestled among the Japanese mountains and lush wildlife sat the?glass-roofed Miho Museum,?and judging by the reactions of stunned spectators (as reported by?The Observer), this year’s venue outdid last year’s impressive?Oscar Niemeyer’s Niter?i Museum in Rio.

Aware of the monumental pressure to create an authentic collection, Ghesqui’re acquired the help of legendary Japanese contemporary designer?Kansai Yamamoto – most famed for the curvilinear jumpsuit he created for David Bowie. ?The collaboration resulted in a collection festered with?classic Japanese art and Kabuki-inspired patterns and prints.

“This show was definitely more emotional,” said Ghesqui’re post-show in an interview with Dazed. “I’m always amazed by the contrast between how they [the Japanese] conserve the history and tradition and at the same, how the country is looking forward and very modern and so we tried to reflect that in the collection.”

Models strutted with a strong presence and attitude, loosely’depicting female biker gangs and modern-day tough chicks in muted tones with intermittent bursts of colour.

Front row guests included Jennifer Connolly, Susi Lau, and Michelle Williams.

The French labels take on the orient was refreshing and moving addition to this seasons Cruise collections. Take a look at the full collection in our gallery above.
