The Piece Of Clothing We Never Thought Would Make A Comeback, Has Made A Comeback
04th Sep 2017
My inner 15-year-old self – the one fighting for permission to go to the ‘Wez’ disco – was risen from the dead when designers like Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu and Gucci sent models down the runway wearing old-school rugby shirts (albeit slightly altered to better suit the modern woman).
It was the ‘IT’ shirt of the Celtic-Tiger Dublin era; normally sported with a classic monogrammed Louis Vuitton, Uggs or boat shoes of some kind, a “just-out-of-bed” hairdo, and a lathering of fake tan. And now, it’s back again (although we can’t say the same for the existential economic wealth), and we’re getting ready to tackle the trend head-on.
Acne Studios is one of the most recent houses to express interest in the trend; sharing this snap on their Instagram of their AW17 collection featuring five models (and one REALLY cute 8-month old baby).
The trend reboot is a nod to the growing urban fashion culture that has engulfed many trends that are now appearing in our favourite?high-street and luxury collections.?It’s also?further proof of the omnipresent fashion cycle and the?growing popularity of the noughties and 2000s fashion trends. But don’t be fooled; this modern, sporty installment is a far more grown-up and sophisticated version of previous seasons and will fit well into Irish wardrobes (Canterbury track pants and Dubarry‘s are not a requirement anymore).
Its revival has come at an impeccable time too: only in June had the Irish Rugby Football Union, IRFU, released the sale of women’s rugby jerseys for the first time ever, so not only are you staying on trend, but you’re supporting the development of female sport, too.
One thing we’re very good here at IMAGE is trend forecasting and deciphering the must-haves from the must-nots. Our decisions are definite and forward-thinking. We’ve already let you in on this season’s?most adaptable wardrobe staple?for transitional weather, we’ve shown you ways to?reinvent the polo neck?and breathe life back into last years pieces, we’ve listed the?best coats we think are worth investing?in, and here’s your heads-up to grab your stripes: that’s your AW17 wardrobe sorted, and it’s only September 4th.
(You are most welcome.)
