The accomplished British fashion designer presented her AW18 collection last night at #NYFW and, at the same time, bid farewell to Fashion Week.
Can you name a fashion label more famous than that of Victoria Beckham? She made her first Fashion Week debut ten years ago as a passion project – a hobby even. Everything about Beckham made her brand desirable almost instantly: as a working mother, her persona was identifiable and loved by women worldwide, and her grace, poise and glamour provided the perfect bases for her brand to grow its cult-like following at an exponential rate. The fact that the brand thrived – not just survived – is a testament to her remarkable success as a designer, businesswoman, mother and global ambassador. She executed a delicate balancing act during her decade-long stint, which made her a key player in the luxury industry.
However, her success didn’t translate into profit which was the ultimate and unfortunate decider of the brand’s faith. According to The Guardian, the label made £36m revenues in 2017 but accumulated a loss of £8.4m. Despite Victoria’s personal popularity rating, her range was seen to be beyond the limitations of the mass market. This sparked her collaboration with high-street giants Reebok to better engage with the mass market.
She hid the brand’s turmoil well and, throughout the last few turbulent years, she kept with the pace of the changing fashion landscape, while still creating designs that are feminine, flattering and wearable straight from the catwalk.
The final hurrah was held in an intimate affair in a regal, Renaissance-style mansion that was one of the largest private houses in Manhattan. The catwalk featured a heavy presence of fine tailoring, animal and abstract prints and an earthy colour-palette with bursts of autumnal tones of orange and periwinkle.
So, what’s next for VB? We know she’s sadly turned down the offer of a Spice Girls world reunion tour. She will show again (for the first time) in her hometown of London at the September 2018 shows. Who knows, maybe we’ll see a VB royal wedding gown…
