Cathal O’Brien of Louis Copeland & Sons shares the must-haves for every stylish man this season (and what to buy him this Christmas!)

In the colder months of the year, our wardrobes have to work harder than ever. Not only do we need outfits that can keep out the cold and rain, but they also need to suit a wide range of occasions, from casual, to work and everything in between. Throw in the Christmas party season, and there’s certainly a lot to consider.

The key to any good menswear wardrobe, Cathal O’Brien, Senior Sales Executive at Louis Copeland & Sons explains, is to invest in quality, versatile pieces that will see you through not only this season, but many years to come.

Cathal O’Brien

When it comes to key pieces, he says to first focus on outerwear to suit your needs. “Functional and stylish outerwear includes practical coats for outdoor activities, like those from Norwegian brand UBR, known for their four-way stretch and waterproof designs, favoured by many Premier League managers.”

For a smarter look, “Crombie-style overcoats are essential for the gentleman who favours a formal look over a suit,” Cathal recommends. “The Canali double-breasted overcoat is a standout this season, featuring a slightly longer length and an elegant drape that enhances its sophistication. We can’t get enough of double-breasted designs this season, as they bring a timeless and refined touch to men’s outerwear.”

When it comes to choosing other pieces, Cathal’s advice is to keep things simple. “The key to balancing style with practicality,” Cathal explains, “lies in comfort and simplicity. Never complicate an outfit with too much colour. Navy is a neutral colour that suits most skin tones, so a quality pair of navy chinos and a navy blazer are perfect for various casual and semi-formal settings, complemented by staples like a crisp white or plain blue shirt that can adapt to any occasion.”

Making any outfit look put-together, he says, isn’t so much about choosing designs that draw immediate attention, but in the way you finish off a look composed of classic pieces. “Adding a pocket square to the breast pocket of your blazer, wearing well-polished shoes, or choosing the right accessories can make all the difference. You’d be surprised how often people overlook these small details. Remember, it’s the expression “head to toe” that matters, so don’t fall on the final hurdle!”

If, however, you are looking for something a little out of the ordinary, Cathal recommends luxury Milanese brand Valstar. “Their beautiful suede bomber jackets are something special that will make you stand out from the crowd, and are available in navy, tan and sage. It’s a great alternative for the classic blazer look, especially for a dressy event. Other essentials would be fine knitwear, let it be a cardigan from Stenstroms, 3 button knit polos and roll necks by Gran Sasso.”

Or for something incredibly versatile, Cathal loves the Scooter jacket from Lubiam. “It comes with a removable insert, making it a dressy jacket with a twist. This piece looks casual and works well as an outdoor layer when combined with other items but is equally dressy when worn indoors – perfect for the Christmas parties coming up. It pairs effortlessly with anything: knitwear, shirting, cotton trousers, dress trousers, and both casual and formal shoes. The scooter jacket is truly the most versatile piece in any gentleman’s wardrobe.”
