‘Gone are the days of wigs being taboo – now they’re mainstream and fashionable’

For the past few years, Amber Jean Rowan has been sharing the advice and building the community she wishes she'd had for her hair loss journey. Now she's using that knowledge to create hair pieces.

Wigs gave me confidence when I had none. Wigs helped me get on with life as a teenage girl who didn’t have hair loss. Wigs allowed me to have a career in my desired professions.

I’ll never forget the feeling of putting on my first high quality natural looking wig. Me and my mum travelled from Dublin to London to collect it.

It was one of the greatest moments I can remember in my hair loss journey. Walking down the street in that wig for the first time was pure bliss. I was no longer afraid of the wind blowing off my shabby old wig or exposing an unnatural hairline or scared of people noticing that I was wearing a wig. I could finally relax. I could have the hair I always dreamed of. It was long, blonde and thick and I was in heaven. Freedom at last.

I’ve been on my hair loss journey since I was 15 and I know first-hand how important hair can be to your sense of self. Today, wearing wigs isn’t a necessity for me anymore. It’s a choice. They allow me to express myself and how I feel on any given day. I now love being hair-free but I adore my wigs too, I’ve grown up with them – they are part of me.

They make me feel beautiful and they have the power to act as a shield against the world when I don’t want to explain why I’m hair-free.

I created Amber Jean to provide a safe, inspiring space I so badly needed, but couldn’t find. I want it to be the place you come to for beautiful, consciously sourced and ethically made hairpieces.

Gone are the days of wigs being taboo – now they’re mainstream and fashionable. Amber Jean premium wigs are only ever made with carefully sourced hair and we work with the UK’s top colourists to create beautiful, unique styles. We also offer a life-long repair service, so when natural wear and tear happens, you know your favourite hair can be restored in safe hands. The pieces are handcrafted, made by skilled artists, with each wig taking 10 days to complete.

The world of wigs and wig care can be overwhelming, especially if you are a newcomer, but we are here to support you every step of the way. Whether you’ve lost your hair for medical reasons or just want to have fun with new looks, we’re shaking things up and making the wig-buying experience as joyful and seamless as possible.

Everyone should try a wig. They can completely change how you feel about yourself. They can change your persona and your whole vibe in a second. It’s pretty amazing to witness. At the Amber Jean campaign shoot, I saw my best pal Caitlyn transform before my eyes. Caitlyn – who has always complained about her thin hair – finally had the chance to try on one of our signature styles. For the campaign, we decided she should be our long-haired fiery redhead. The moment she put that wig on her confidence changed dramatically. She was a new woman – I’d never seen her so radiant.

Over the past couple of years, I’ve found the joy and freedom wearing wigs can bring. I’ve had so much fun changing up my looks, I’ve tried red, brown, blonde and recently pink. I want everyone to enjoy the freedom that comes with expressing yourself in a way you never have before.

Amber Jean launches this spring.
