How colour analysis – TikTok’s favourite fashion trend – can transform your style

How colour analysis – TikTok’s favourite fashion trend – can transform your style

Karina Macmullan is an image, style and colour consultant based in Dublin, who has completed over 500 style transformations. Here she explains how colour analysis can transform your style and confidence, not to mention help you make more informed, sustainable shopping decisions.

In 2018, I decided to make a career change from my law background, and have been working for three years on this new path of style and fashion. I love helping others to discover and embrace their unique style and believe that the right image can empower individuals, boosting their personal and professional confidence.

My most popular service is colour analysis consultation with Style Express, a package that helps women match their best colours with their personality style and understand what they would like to communicate to the world through the elements of style.

The approach I adopt is a deeply inclusive system that welcomes individuals of all races. Throughout the years I have worked with individuals from over twenty different nationalities and have completed over 500 transformations. I stay updated with the latest studies and techniques in the industry, offering personalised in-person or digital experiences that emphasize diversity, innovation, and individualization. My newest service, The Iris Analysis, enhances your colour analysis package by introducing colours that can help you choose the perfect hair colour, eye shadow or eyeliner beyond those already in your palette. This tool can complement your existing colours and expand your range of choices.

Colour analysis is a method that seeks to determine the most flattering colours for an individual’s unique chromatic beauty, i.e., for the colours that already define our beauty. It uses the principle of colours to create harmony by considering eye colour, skin tone, and hair colour. Beyond aesthetics, personal colour analysis can accentuate a person’s strengths and boost self-confidence. Wearing the right colours, not only in clothing, but make-up, accessories and hair shades can enhance our positive features and make us appear younger and healthier while effectively communicating our desired image.

The 12-Season Colour Method comprehends the diverse spectrum of human skin tones, hair colours, and eye shades, categorizing them into twelve distinct palettes – you can find out more about that here. Colour analysis can be done in-person and online and will identify three characteristics of the individual; their depth, clarity and undertone. Each season – spring, summer, autumn, winter – is subdivided into more specific categories, such as light, dark, clear, muted, warm and cool colours, allowing for a personalised understanding of which colours harmonise best with an individual’s natural features. People with cool undertones typically look great in shades of blue, purple and pink, along with jewel tones like emerald green and royal blue. Silver jewellery compliments cool undertones beautifully. On the other hand, individuals with warm undertones shine in warm reds and earthy browns, enhancing their golden or peachy skin tones. Gold jewellery harmonizes well with warm undertones. Knowing your undertone can guide you in making better fashion and beauty decisions, not only helping you always appear at your best but also with smart shopping.

The increasing demand for personal colour analysis comes from the desire for self-esteem and self-awareness, especially in identifying what suits you best. The concept of individual colour analysis originated around 1942 when American fashion designer Suzanne Caygill introduced style guides and tailored colour charts based on seasons and individual personalities. This concept gained significant popularity in the early 1980s with Carole Jackson’s book Colour Me Beautiful and experienced a resurgence in the 2010s with the development and promotion of various versions of seasonal analysis by image and colour consultants worldwide.

During the 2020 pandemic, there was an increased focus on self-care and self-connection. while people started realising the influence of colours on mood and confidence, especially as they spent the majority of their time at home. In 2022, with the feeling of better days to come, designer collections embraced vibrant colours and joyful clothing as key trends post-pandemic, a trend that became referred to as ‘dopamine dressing’, aiming to evoke happiness through clothing based on psychological research. As numerous colours filled the stores, individuals started wondering which hues would suit them the most.

In recent years, personal colour analysis has become more popular through social media and influencers. It has empowered individuals to make informed choices about their wardrobe and make-up, leading to increased confidence and self-expression. Colour analysis services have also become more accessible to a wider audience with affordable rates, extending beyond celebrities.

Sustainability and minimalism have also contributed to the renewed popularity of colour analysis. As sustainable fashion awareness grows, more people are making thoughtful and enduring clothing choices. Colour analysis encourages purchasing items that complement your natural beauty, reducing impulsive buys promoting a curated wardrobe or even aiding in the creation of a capsule wardrobe tailored to your own style.

Individuals are increasingly seeking to express their uniqueness and personal style. Colour analysis enables people to explore and embrace their distinctive beauty, aligning with contemporary values of authenticity and self-expression. Many people will tell you about how colour analysis has changed their lives for the better. They speak of newfound confidence, an enhanced sense of style and a deeper understanding of what makes them uniquely beautiful. By discovering your palette with colours that best compliment your skin tone, hair, and eyes, individuals often find that shopping for clothes becomes more enjoyable and efficient.

Ultimately, colour analysis is not just about fashion. It is about self-discovery and embracing the best version of yourself, can change your life by enhancing your confidence and self-esteem and help you make more informed shopping choices for your wardrobe, make-up, accessories and hair.
