How to nail the milky clean girl nail aesthetic, according to a celebrity manicurist
Michelle Class – a Sally Hansen brand ambassador and celebrity manicurist with a client list that includes Nicola Coughlan, Margot Robbie, Kate Moss and Lily James – shares the five key steps to nailing the perfect fleshy clean girl nude nail.
Customise your own nail shade.
“To have that clean girl nail aesthetic, you have to have the right nail shade that matches your skin tone. Some of us have more of a bluey undertone, or red or purple, so you have to customise a shade for your own healthy nail. The Sally Hansen Good Kind Pure vegan range has four shades you can mix and match – one of my favourites is Once Upon A Chiffon, which is a really nice shade.”
Only do one coat.
“For a healthy look, natural nude nail, I would only use one coat. Otherwise, it becomes too opaque. Just do one coat and make sure it’s the right sheer and add a super glossy top coat.”
Get your nails in good health.
“If your nails are in bits, start off with the Sally Nail Care range, it is so intense and so vast that there’s something for everybody. If you’ve been wearing acrylics or gels, there’s the Sally Hansen Complete Care 7-in-1 Nail Treatment, €13.99, that you apply every day or use as a base and a top coat – it’s got loads of protein and biotin in it that can help restore your nails.”
Focus on prep.
“You’ve got to do your prep work or it’s a bit like painting a wall – you’ve got to fill in the cracks. Do your prep work beforehand, you have to work from the base up and really work on your nail care.”
Oil your nails constantly.
“Prep your cuticles, push them back and oil regularly, like religiously. You want to be oiling like three, four, five times a day. Keep it at your desk, or in your handbag, do it on the bus, when you’re sitting watching Netflix in the evening. I literally keep one on my coffee table. I love the Sally Hansen Vitamin E oil, and I just sit there watching TV, putting the oil on and rubbing it in. Leave it to soak, so you’re not just washing it off. It really is a massive key to nail health.”
