An Irish yoga teacher and holistic wellness professional based in North Co. Dublin, Margaret Young draws inspiration from old photos of 60s socialite and style icon Talitha Getty. Drawn to comfortable pieces she’ll get years of wear out of, she’s also a big fan of boho so is very here for its revival! She shares a week in her wardrobe with us below.
MONDAY
Today is teaching day. As a yoga teacher, yes I spend a lot of time in leggings and I have quite a selection from solid colours to leopard print. Considering how much wear they get, I can safely say that Luluemon, Alo Yoga, and Irish brands New Dimension Active and Trendy and Bendy leggings pass both the squat test and the test of time. Vest or T-shirt-wise, I am less picky but I do like a high neck and a flattering cut. For the top layer, I have every colour and style in my own Wild Soul branded and slogan sweatshirts which I no longer sell but are still going strong. My fashion background (I studied and worked in retail display, buying, and merchandising) came in handy when it came to producing my own mini-collection. I am also partial to a 4th Arq fleece zip-up.
TUESDAY
Today is a day for meetings and running around before evening classes. Whether it’s in vogue or not, it’s boho style for me always. It may be a little harder to get that “Chloé girl” vibe in the colder weather, but I wear my many bohemian blouses all year round, popping a thermal vest underneath if needed. Some of my all-time best finds were the William Morris and H&M collab from 2018 – I am only sorry I didn’t buy more of these pieces. Similarly Oasis’ collab with Liberty London all the way back in 2008 and their collection in conjunction with London’s oldest botanical garden eight years ago both yielded some gems. I have finally returned to wide-legged or flared trousers after years of skinny jeans and honestly, I don’t know what took me so long!
WEDNESDAY
Today I am class and event planning. I have more Breton tops than is necessary for one person, but this Max Mara one is the most expensive but also the best quality of my collection. I have to reign myself in from going full nautical and looking like a sailor so I keep it to one piece and maybe an accessory. My one and only tattoo is of an anchor so I have a little reminder of my love for the sea wherever I am anyway. The trench coat was my mother’s and is therefore pre-loved. I am delighted trenches are on trend again. Years ago, I had a Peter O’Brien version from AWear that I wore for seasons. My dream coat would be a camel coat from Max Mara.
THURSDAY
After a long day, I went for a mid-week dinner date with my husband, I wore H&M wide-leg jeans, a simple lace cami from Dunnes Stores, and this beautiful sequin jacket. I adore charity shops and vintage fairs, and this jacket was an absolute find at a fair in the Royal Marine Hotel in Dun Laoghaire. They have an antique and vintage fair a few times a year, I always find something amazing, from a 60s Babycham glass to an 80s Dior necklace. The entrance fee is just €3.50, it’s one of my favourite ways to spend a Sunday. I tried to work out the history of this jacket, it appears to have originated from a design house based in Mumbai, India. I always associate black sequin jackets with Madonna’s character in the 80s classic movie Desperately Seeking Susan. I know I will have this jacket for many years to come.
FRIDAY
The weather is so mild for the time of year, and as I had a day of online consultations with holistic wellness clients, I wore my Rae Feather Deborah dress. It’s the most comfortable thing ever. It also looks really nice on a Zoom screen as the blue pops. It ties into my nautical aesthetic and the cotton fabric is cool in hot weather but cosy enough against the skin when the temperature drops. It’s the one summer piece that I haven’t packed away just yet.
SATURDAY
Saturday is a day of rest. Once the parkun and the dog walks are out of the way, I am all for lounging. Since lockdown, I have been loving a “bougie PJ” as I call them. I often wear printed co-cord sets, especially in summer, and some male members of my family confuse the two. I often get messages from my brothers asking why I wore my PJs out in public… I tell them they are definitely not PJs and also, “it’s called fashion, look it up!” When my husband is doing the laundry he definitely can’t tell my PJs and my co-ord sets apart. But when it does come to actually wearing PJs (indoors only, I promise!) the more luxurious the better. These are from a brand called Their Nibs in Avoca and as I love peacocks so much, they had to come home with me. I actually purchased them at an IMAGE/Avoca event and so got a lovely 20% discount!
SUNDAY
One of my favourite things about winter fashion is the opportunity to wear velvet, a fabric I adore. I have this navy velvet suit from Mango a few years now. The trousers were tailored by my mother, so are a perfect fit. My hip-to-waist ratio does not quite fit exactly with what the high street stores are producing so I am lucky to have a dressmaker in the family who can do these jobs for me even in her 80s! I have a similar suit in black, although the pieces were bought separately and the black Zara jacket is a charity shop find. Today I was attending a fashion event with my friend, stylist Viorica Caraus. I knew she would be presenting her segment in a power suit so I followed suit (pardon the pun). My bag was also velvet with an embroidered peacock. My aunt Kathleen bought this back for me from her travels somewhere.
