Poplin shirts: How to style the Cool Girl classic

by Sarah Finnan
11th Jun 2023

Over the past few years, the striped poplin shirt has surged in popularity – shedding its reputation as stuffy office attire and rebranding as a Cool Girl style staple.

An everlasting wardrobe staple, it’s one of those classics you’ll revisit season after season. In winter, it’s the perfect layering piece and you’ll wear it over polo necks, under cardigans, with leggings, jeans or your favourite skirts and tights combo.

In summer, the poplin shirt discards the excess and becomes the star of the show – particularly now, as we enjoy no-jacket weather. To amp up the casual, roll up your sleeves and pair with your best distressed denim. Or, embrace the pep and wear open over a figure-hugging slip dress with dainty socks and loafers… the options are endless.

Available in just about every colour, shape, cut and fit, there truly is a poplin shirt to suit all styles and once you incorporate one into your wardrobe, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do so sooner.

Don’t just take our word for it though… see how our favourite celebs and street stylers have been wearing the wardrobe stalwarth below.

@chloemaymcginley

Follow Chloe’s lead and wear yours open over a white tank top. Half jacket/half top, you can take it off if the weather heats up or button it up as night falls and the sun goes into hiding once more.

@meccajw

If you don’t follow Mecca, you’re missing out because her feed is my daily dose of serotonin. A big fan of colour, here she shows us how to pair classic with quirky (and makes it look easy too).

@lucywilliams02

Throwing it back to the days of the Miu Miu micro mini, Lucy Williams is embracing legs out weather by pairing hers with a skirt and crossbody – a tried and tested formula.

@kaiagerber

A woman after my own heart, Kaia Gerber went for comfort… and she really couldn’t look comfier. Colour + linen trousers = a match made to last.
