Having dressed the likes of CMAT and Bimini, styled 120 dancers for a special Brit Awards performance by Becky Hill and Chase and Status, and brought together out of this world looks for music videos, magazine spreads, and red carpets — Mia Maxwell knows how to create a fit with that makes an impact.
Some of their most iconic looks to date (of which there are many) has got to be CMAT’s ass-cleavage-defining dress at this year’s Brit Awards. Designed by Sophie Lincoln, the whisper of exposed derriere caused quite the splash, and rightly so.
Mia is also a London-based zine maker at FEM ZINE, a teacher, and a freelance artist. Though their work usually involves work behind the scenes, we wanted to get a little insight into their personal style. Here, Mia shares their go-pieces…
Definitely comfy, can’t be bothered to be uncomfortable. And always a mishmash of things, I’ve always pulled inspiration from British subculture, working class aesthetics, queer aesthetics, and lightly nodding to trends to tie it all together.
At the moment I feel that ballet flats and socks really do up any of my cosy outfits, so I can wear my regular jorts, jeans or trackies, and a ballet flat will help me elevate.
Eek. A bomber jacket. I’m still on that.
A stained old tracksuit is my Sunday look, as I’ll be out walking my dog in the woods or marshes.
My Calvin boxers and a vest is how you’ll find me.
Hotness.
I have a lot of stuff that was my mum’s that she’s kept and now lives in my studio archive. It’s all treasured and I love to see them live a life on other people!
What we all want is a trainer that is amazing for your feet that isn’t ugly.
I’ve been going to ATIKA, which used to be Blitz, since I was 14. Always a good find in there.
Anyone gay.
I don’t do a lot of beauty stuff, I’m a cut and dye my own hair kinda gal. But self-care — I have to admit, I’m a yoga addict, do with that what you will.
