When it comes to curating an autumn/winter wardrobe that really works, there are five essentials everyone should have.
A polished trench coat
The humble trench coat really comes into its own this time of year. The perfect transitional coat, you can start phasing it in toward the end of summer and depending on the fit, can often bring it right through November too – a slightly oversized silhouette allows for thicker knits underneath which are key for keeping warm as winter temperatures roll in. Black is perennially classic, though beige, brown or khaki work just as well.
Jeans that actually fit
If you’re anything like me, you probably have more than one pair of jeans stacked in your wardrobe… but how many of them actually fit? There’s no denying that shopping for denim is an arduous task, but it’s worth spending some time trying things on to see what suits you. Good denim should hug your body, not cut off circulation the moment you exhale. Dark washes work great for AW and are often sleek enough to wear to the office.
A white tee
One of the best things you can do when curating your capsule wardrobe is to invest in a good quality white tee. It’s the perfect layering piece, is endlessly versatile and will help you get even more wear out of the clothes you already own so it’s definitely worth spending a little more on.
A cosy knit
Knitwear is a given this time of year but again, it’s worth spending a little more on something that’s going to last – cheaper options tend to ball easily and while this can be rectified, it’s a pain to keep on top of. If you want something truly decadent, you can’t go wrong with cashmere. Soft as butter, it will keep you cosy all winter long.
Black boots
When it comes to footwear, black boots are essential. Not only will they keep your toes dry and warm, but they’re a great way to elevate an outfit with minimal effort. Knee-high boots will help shield your legs from the cold when wearing skirts and tights while block heels go a long way in adding a touch of elegance (while still ensuring comfort). For an everyday shoe, stick to flat styles with thick soles.
