Looking for smoother, refreshed-looking skin? Microneedling might be just the glow-up game-changer you’re after. From its collagen-boosting magic to the skin concerns it tackles, we asked senior therapist and skin expert, Jade Guidon, of Fitzgerald Private Clinic Dublin and Donegal, to advise on the treatment can take your beauty routine to the next level.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is a minimally invasive cosmetic procedure that uses fine needles to create micro-injuries in the skin. This process stimulates the body’s natural healing response, promoting collagen and elastin production, which can improve skin texture, tone, and overall appearance.

What can microneedling do for you?

Firstly, microneedling improves the skin’s quality, texture and appearance. Improved quality of skin through collagen stimulation refers to skin that looks healthier, firmer and more youthful due to the enhanced support structure beneath the surface. Microneedling is a versatile treatment that can address a wide range of skin concerns, leading to:

~ Softened fine lines and wrinkles.
~ Diminished pigmentation and discolouration.
~ A refined and smaller pore size.
~ Scarring: acne scarring, surgical scarring and stretch marks.

Consultation is key

Before embarking on a microneedling journey, it is crucial to have a thorough consultation with your practitioner rather than simply booking online and arriving on the day. This initial meeting allows for the creation of a personalised plan tailored to your specific goals, as different skin concerns necessitate distinct protocols for optimal results. A consultation ensures that your treatment is effective, safe, and aligned with your individual needs.

Prepare your skin with an appropriate retinoid

Using a retinoid in the lead-up to a microneedling treatment can significantly enhance your results. Retinoids promote skin cell turnover and stimulate collagen production, much like microneedling does. By incorporating a retinoid into your skincare routine before the procedure, you effectively double down on collagen stimulation, preparing your skin for optimal healing and rejuvenation. This combination can lead to more substantial improvements in texture, firmness, and overall skin appearance, maximising the benefits of both approaches.

Introducing RF (RadioFrequency Microneedling)

At the Fitzgerald Private Clinic we use SkinPen as our medical microneedling device that is internationally recognised for offering standard-setting results, utilising no less than 14 Japanese stainless steel surgical grade needles to (comfortably) deliver effective vertical skin needling.

To take things up a notch further, if your skin is suitable, you can opt for RF (Radiofrequency Microneedling) which combines the benefits of traditional microneedling with radiofrequency energy, delivering deeper skin stimulation and tightening effects. While it also promotes collagen production and improves skin texture like SkinPen, the addition of RF energy allows for enhanced tissue remodelling and tighter skin. This dual-action approach not only addresses common concerns such as fine lines and scarring but also provides significant tightening benefits, making RF microneedling an excellent option for those seeking more dramatic skin rejuvenation results.

How to elevate your microneedling treatments

First and foremost: don’t forget the neck

When it comes to microneedling, the neck is often overlooked, but it’s just as prone to signs of ageing as the face (often even more so). By treating both the face and neck, you’ll achieve a more cohesive, youthful appearance.

Boost your results with post-treatment serums

Enhance your microneedling treatment with the powerful benefits of CALECIM Professional Serum. Packed with exosome-derived growth factors and stem cells, this advanced serum accelerates collagen production and enhances your skin’s natural repair process. By adding it to your post-treatment routine, you’ll amplify your results, promoting faster healing and a more radiant, youthful glow. Treat your skin to the ultimate post-care boost for long-lasting, visible improvements.

Consider LED Phototherapy for a fuss-free recovery

Take your microneedling results to the next level by adding Dermalux LED phototherapy. Near-infrared light accelerates the healing process, reduces inflammation, and promotes cellular repair, while blue light effectively reduces bacteria on the skin, preventing breakouts and promoting a clearer complexion. This powerful combination works to soothe, heal, and protect your skin post-treatment, ensuring faster recovery and enhanced results.

By incorporating a retinoid into your skincare routine before the procedure, you effectively double down on collagen stimulation, preparing your skin for optimal healing and rejuvenation.

What is the downtime?

Post treatment the skin will be red, warm and possibly a little puffy. You will also experience skin tightness. The main redness improves over the following 3-4 hours, and overall redness usually subsides within 1-3 days. Skin flaking may also occur in the first few days. These are all normal responses.

The importance of maintenance treatments

Maintaining the results of collagen-stimulating treatments is essential for countering the ongoing effects of ageing. As our skin continually undergoes changes, regular annual treatments help to sustain and enhance the benefits achieved from initial procedures. This proactive approach not only reinforces collagen production but also combats the gradual decline in skin elasticity and firmness over time. By committing to these periodic sessions, you ensure that your skin remains rejuvenated, healthy, and vibrant, effectively prolonging the positive outcomes of your treatments and supporting your overall skin health in the long run.

Pre-care guide for microneedling

Preparing your skin for microneedling is essential to ensure the best possible results. Here are some guidelines to get your skin ready for the procedure:

Consultation. Schedule a consultation with your practitioner to discuss your goals, medical history, and any concerns. This will help tailor the treatment to your needs.

Avoid sun exposure. Stay out of direct sunlight for at least two weeks before your appointment. Sunburned skin increases the risk of complications.

Discontinue certain products. Stop using retinoids or exfoliants (AHA/BHA/PHA) at least 3 days prior to treatment to reduce irritation.

Avoid waxing and laser treatments. Do not undergo any waxing, laser hair removal, or chemical peels for at least two weeks prior to microneedling in the area that is being treated.

Arrive with clean skin. On the day of your appointment, arrive with clean, makeup-free skin. Avoid applying any products before your treatment.

Plan for downtime. Understand that your skin may be red and sensitive post-treatment. Schedule your appointment for a time when you can afford recovery time if required.

Post-care guide for microneedling

Caring for your skin after microneedling is crucial for optimal healing and results. Follow these guidelines to ensure your skin recovers properly.

Expect redness and swelling. It’s normal to experience redness and slight swelling immediately after the procedure. This should subside within a few hours to days.

Avoid sun exposure. Stay out of direct sunlight for at least two weeks after treatment. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily to protect your skin from UV damage.

Do not touch your face. Avoid touching, picking, or scratching the treated area unnecessarily to prevent infection and irritation.

Avoid heat and sweat. Stay away from hot showers, saunas, and intense workouts for at least 48 hours to minimise irritation and redness.

Skip harsh products. Do not use retinoids, AHAs, BHAs, or any active skincare products for at least 5 days post-treatment to allow your skin to recover.

Follow practitioner instructions. Adhere to any specific aftercare recommendations provided by your practitioner, as they may vary based on your individual needs.

How much does it cost?

A single SkinPen (face only) costs €250, for face and neck costs €300, while a course of three is €675. RF Microneedling for face or neck costs €600 and for both costs €800. A PrePaid RF course of three sessions for face or neck costs €1700 with 3 sessions of complimentary Dermalux LED Light Therapy.
