The expert-recommended facial for the forty-something bride

With just 6 weeks to go forty-something bride-to-be Rachel Reidy gets advice on the best treatments to promote a brighter, smoother and clearer complexion.

SIX WEEKS TO GO

I love the aesthetic of the Fitzgerald Private Clinic on 3 Anne’s Lane, Dublin 2. Having recently returned from London, where I lived for 20 years, I wasn’t familiar with this clinic, however, it regularly caught my eye when I parked my car nearby and I always admired it.

On arrival, I was greeted by Clinic Manager, Noelle, who could not have been more friendly. We chatted away like old pals, mainly about my upcoming wedding, while I was waiting for my skin consultation with senior therapist Jade. I was a little nervous about getting anything too invasive done with only 6 weeks out from the big day, especially as I have very sensitive skin. I need not have worried as Jade soon put my mind at ease.

A lot of clinics can feel a bit intimidating, but not this one. In my consultation, we discussed my current skincare regime and any concerns that I have. Jade looked at my skin and suggested a Signature Obagi Pro-C Peptide Facial to promote a brighter, smoother and a clearer complexion. This is such a relaxing skin treatment suitable for most skin types. I am quite self-conscious about the pigmentation on my face and the use of Vitamin C helps hugely with this, whilst also promoting collagen. Peptides are the building blocks of proteins, so are great for ageing skin. I am an older bride so anything that can be done to make me feel more youthful is extremely welcome!

My skin was prepared with Obagi Medical’s gentle and effective skin cleanser and toner, followed by the application of select Obagi Medical Professional-C Force Field products. We finished with a mask containing hyaluronic acid for an added boost of hydration and skin nourishment. To maximise the effectiveness of the mask Jade exposed me to Dermalux LED Light Therapy, the red light in particular improves elasticity and firmness. She told me to snooze for 20 minutes and I took her at her word. When I woke, the facial was sadly over and all that was left was to add the all-important SPF. There is no downtime for this treatment and my skin appeared glowing and hydrated immediately.

ONE WEEK TO GO

Jade suggested I could still fit in more treatment one week out – one that would be guaranteed not to upset my skin in any way. She suggested the Environ Cool Peel. I have long been a fan of the Environ brand and this treatment uses lactic acid which provides a gentle yet effective exfoliation that revives, clarifies, and promotes skin radiance. Despite the term ‘peel’ being in the name of the treatment, there is absolutely no peeling or downtime (this can of course be increased as necessary to create a more bespoke treatment depending on skin requirements).

Lactic acid is great for maintaining skin moisture so my skin continued to look hydrated right up to the day of my wedding. The treatment concluded with another blast of the hydrating mask and incredible LED light for an increased collagen boost! Upon leaving the clinic I was introduced to the wonderful Dr Deirdre Fitzgerald, the Medical Director and co-founder of the Clinic. Deirdre is also a practising Consultant Surgeon and Aesthetic Medical Doctor. It was clear to see how passionate she is about her work, and her medical background allows her the insight and perspective to know how and when to treat patients. It was such a treat to meet her. I would highly recommend this clinic and both of the treatments that Jade recommended to any future brides out there and take it from me, it is never too late to get a little boost before your wedding!
