There’s going to be a levy on disposable coffee cups — so you’re going to want to pick up one of these stylish, sustainable alternatives

It’s no secret that disposable coffee cups are damaging the planet, but now they’ll be hurting your pocket too.

While we may have had to temporarily retire our reusable coffee cups and travel mugs during the pandemic, the introduction of a 20 cent levy is more than enough encouragement to opt for a sustainable alternative.

On track to be introduced before the year is out, the new government measure aims to make Ireland the first country in the world to eliminate the use of disposable coffee cups that would otherwise end up in landfill or incinerators.

With that in mind, we’ve gathered some of the most stylish travel mugs on the market to have in your handbag, by the doorway or in the back of the car for when that caffeine craving hits.

Mother 330ml €35

Designed right here in Ireland, these double-walled travel mugs will keep your coffee steaming for up to three hours. Available in four beautiful designs, they’ve pledged to plant a tree for every cup sold — so this is the ultimate guilt-free purchase.

Frank Green 295ml €29.99

If you want to make your reusable coffee cup an outfit accessory, these ceramic Frank Green cups are seriously chic. These award-winning designs are made with an unbreakable base and are fully customisable, plus, they’re guaranteed not to spill in your bag!

Chilly’s 340ml €28

If you want to inject some personality into your coffee cup game, Chilly’s have a whole range of double-walled travel mugs designed by British pottery brand Emma Bridgewater that feature everything from cats and dogs to romantic skylines and flower arrangements.

Monkey Cups 340ml €25

On a mission to turn the tide on single-use, this award-winning brand is making barista standard coffee cups right here in Ireland. Based in Waterford, Monkey Cups have a whole range of colour combinations to choose from and you can even customise your own, for that added personal touch.

Neon Kactus 355ml €14.99

Made from 100% recyclable and sustainable materials, these glass coffee cups are lightweight, durable, and fit perfectly under a coffee machine. It’s got a splash-proof lid that’ll help make sure you make it to work without any spillages and it’s very easy on the eye too!
