Want to shake your look up? Here are 5 summer hair trends to try out

Yearning for change but not quite sure where to start? Before you let TikTok convince you to give yourself a DIY wolf cut, best consult the experts first.

At this point in the year, we’ve exchanged our winter woollies for linen co-ords and birks, have switched our usual foundation for tinted suncream and have committed to drinking only iced coffee for the next two months (whatever the weather). Summer is a chance to reinvent ourselves you see.

Usually, the focus is largely on our holiday wardrobes, but if you’re looking for an aesthetic refresh, your hair is another good place to start. That’s not to say that you need to do anything drastic, in fact, you don’t need to do anything at all… but, if you feel like a change and fancy updating your hairdo, let those in the know be your guide.

We caught up with colour specialist Mark Sherwood, senior stylist at Zeba Salon on South William Street, to chat all things hair – namely what he predicts the summer’s hottest trends to be. From 90s volume to French Pearl (a luxe new take on summer blonde), here’s what he had to say…

90s volume

While trends from the ’90s often resurface in fashion and beauty, the big-volume hair trend from that era has evolved over time. This summer, voluminous hairstyles are back again but with a modern twist. Instead of the overly teased and structured looks of the 90s, the emphasis now is on natural-looking volume and texture. Effortless waves, tousled curls, and lived-in styles are in vogue. The goal is to create voluminous hair that looks relaxed and undone, yet full of body.

Glam rock 70s

Glam rock is back, from the short mullet to the shag and curtain bangs. If you’ve been watching Daisy Jones & The Six you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about. If you haven’t, first go binge-watch it and then come back here. Now you’re up to date you will know this show is a goldmine for your hair inspo folder. It’s all about embracing your natural texture and waves – think air-drying and scrunching the hair into shape. These styles are perfect for the warmer weather we are experiencing.

Hair health

Similar to how make-up trends have moved to more paired-back, clean-girl skin, hair has followed. When thinking of this look, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley always comes to mind. Her hair is quite simple – almost completely one length with a soft layer. But it’s long, thick, and shiny. Embrace using less heat on your hair during the good weather. Treatments, serums, and sleeping on a silk pillowcase will make some big changes without making it look like you’re trying too hard.

Box bob

Hailey Bieber is never far from our client’s minds when looking for inspiration. She seems to be the girl who can do no wrong in terms of hair. As we move into summer 2023 there is a lean to simpler and more clean haircuts. Today’s bob is all one length and sits at the jaw – cut sharp and polished. Put down the scissors and get yourself to the salon. This is one that is best left to the professionals. We want more Hailey, less Dora the Explorer

Luxe blonde

In recent years, there has been a growing trend for natural-looking and low-maintenance summer blondes. One popular shade that has gained attention is French Pearl. French Pearl is a beautiful, soft blonde shade with both warm and cool undertones that resembles the luminosity of pearls. It’s a versatile colour that can complement various skin tones and is often achieved through a combination of balayage and babylights techniques. This hair colour trend offers a sophisticated and effortlessly chic look for the summer season.

Golden blondes are also a popular trend for summer and links back to the healthy hair trend. Less bleaching and softer colouring leads to healthier and shinier hair. This hair colour features warm, golden tones that evoke a sun-kissed look. It’s a vibrant and radiant shade that adds warmth and dimension to the hair. Golden blondes can range from light golden hues to deeper, honey-like tones, depending on personal preference. This hair colour works well on those with warm undertones in their skin and can create a luminous, beachy vibe that is perfect for the summer season. It’s a versatile option that can be achieved through various colouring techniques, such as highlights, balayage, or all-over colour.
