George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin
George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin got married! The world’s most famous previously-married bachelor has been tamed! By a famous-in-her-industry lawyer! The ceremony took place in Venice Saturday evening, amid sunset hitting the canal, gondolas and paparazzi speedboats. Here’s what we know so far.
Their love story
Until a couple of months ago George Clooney, 53, was one of Hollywood’s leading Confirmed Bachelors, regularly and publicly dismissing the idea of marriage in interviews while dating a parade of actresses, cocktail waitresses and Lisa Snowden – who will never let you forget that early noughties fact. Amal, 36, is famous in legal circles for her high-profile human rights work, she’s defending Julian Assange, and apparently bonded with the actor over their shared interest in international politics. George has been vocal regarding the ongoing refugee situation in Darfur, so you can be sure this is a meeting of minds as well as two beautiful people settling down.?It’s been a quick courtship, a whirlwind of White House dinners and holidays in Tanzania and the Seychelles, with the couple only being linked together for a year and?engaged for a mere five months.
The guestlist
Talk about star studded. Our very own Bono and Ali swooped in – no word yet on whether Mr. Paul Hewson serenaded the happy couple. Cindy Crawford came along with her husband Rande Gerber, who was on Best Man duties and is also a business partner of Clooney’s in their tequila company, CASAMIGOS. Anna Wintour and Bill Murray were also in attendance and we hope to God they shared a dance. Amal’s parents, who paid for the wedding, also attended alongside Clooney’s?Ocean’s Eleven, Twelve and Thirteen co-star Matt Damon and his wife. Noted absentees included Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The couple are combining their honeymoon, that whole parenting thing and a movie shoot in Malta so a weekend jaunt to Venice was not doable.
The venue
A seven star hotel in Venice – ’tis far from that we were raised. The Aman Hotel on Venice’s Grand Canal was chosen by the pair as their wedding venue. The Aman Hotel dates from the 15th-Century Palazzo Papadopoli and one night in a Canal Grande Suite will set you back €3650.
The bride wore?
No one knows yet! Reports indicate that Amal swayed towards Alexander McQueen, like this decade’s other Most Famous Bride, so watch this space for gown confirmation.?It seems?Vogue won the bidding war for photos, hence the Wintour connection. And while we haven’t seen what stunned the aisles the British-Lebanese barrister had no qualms offering the world a glimpse at her impeccable trosseau. For her pre-wedding dinner she favoured a red and black Alexander McQueen dress. Her arrival in Venice was accompanied by a black and white Dolce & Gabbana dress that has now sold out, according to?the Daily Mail.?The morning after the wedding party, the bride and groom looked impeccable leaving the hotel. Clooney was reliably dapper in a grey suit while Amal went short with a white lace dress and pink appliqu’s.
And the groom?
All roads lead to Armani when it comes to Gorgeous George.
